(Two texts on opposite sides of a tile. Most scholars agree that the two texts refer to each other and form a dialogue; it is much discussed, however, who the discussants are, and which text is the first in order. Moreover, some of the words are difficult to read, and their reading is the object of an ongoing discussion:) Iulius, bookkeeper of the brickworks; because Anthinus has paid me the quantity of 533 (tiles) I say thank you, my lord. – (LITERALLY: Resolve what you done less, and so show your gratitude, and two more, because you counted less) Replace as many ("quod" here read as a typing error for "quot") as are of lower quality (minus fecisti), and then redeem (gratias age); and two more because you counted too little.
Ti ringrazio, signore.
