Our lords, the unconquered princes Honorius, Theodosius and Constantius, judges and rewarders of virtues, to Petronius Maximus, of clarissimus rank, prefect of the City. By request of the most splendid senate and Roman people, [the emperors] commanded this statue to be set up as an eternal monument of his services in the forum Ulpium (ie, of Trajan), to him who is embellished by the equally distinguished titles of his grandparents and ancestors, who in his youth was a tribune and notary in the imperial consistory in his nineteenth year, count of the imperial purse ( comes sacrarum remunerationum ) for three years, afterwards prefect of the City for one year and six months, and who deserved all following dignities within his twenty-fifh year of age, as a public testimony and as a decision of the eternal princes.
