To Caius Marius Eventius, of clarissimus rank, a most loyal man, an advocate during the years of his youth, [and] later, by imperial command, for five years the most esteemed defensor of the territory of this city and of the neighbouring towns. On account of his distinguished services towards the council ( ordo ), landowners ( possessores ) and citizens, and for the perpetuation of his name in benefit of his descendants, the council ( ordo ) and citizens of Fanum set up [this] statue, at their own expense, that it might serve, both as testimony to him himself of his deeds, and might inspire others, through his example, to exercise the office of defensor in the most upright manner.
