Gods. Decree 5 (325/4) In the archonship of Antikles (325/4), in the fifth prytany, of Aigeis, for which Antiphon son of Koroibos of Eleusis was secretary. On the eleventh, the thirty-fourth of the prytany. (5) Of the presiding committee (proedrōn) Philyllos of Eleusis was putting to the vote. Demosthenes son of Demokles of Lamptrai+1+ proposed: since Herakleides of Salamis+2+ continues to show love of honour (philotimoumenos) towards the Athenian People and to do whatever good is in his power; and both previously donated in the (10) grain shortage+3+ 3,000 medimnoi of wheat at 5 drachmas,+4+ being the first of the merchants to sail in, and again when there were the public subscriptions (epidoseis),+5+ donated 3,000 drachmas for grain purchase, and in other respects continues to be well disposed and honour-loving (philotimoumenos) towards the People, the People shall decide: (15) to praise Herakleides son of Charikleides of Salamis and crown him with a gold crown for his good will and love of honour (philotimias) towards the Athenian People; and he shall be proxenos and benefactor of the Athenian People, himself and his descendants; and they shall have (20) right of ownership (egktēsin) of land and a house according to the law and they shall do military service and pay capital taxes (eisphoras) with the Athenians; and the prytany secretary (grammatea kata prutaneian) shall inscribe this decree and the other praises there have been for him+6+ (25) on a stone stele and stand it on the acropolis; and for inscribing the stele the treasurer shall give 30 drachmas from the People’s fund for expenditure on decrees. _ Decree 3 (330/29-328/7) Telemachos son of Theangelos of Acharnai+7+ proposed: since (30) Herakleides of Salamis donated grain to the People at five drachmas, as first of the merchants to sail in in the archonship of Aristophon (330/29), the People shall resolve: to praise Herakleides son of Charikleides of Salamis and crown him with a gold crown (35) for his love of honour (philotimias) towards the Athenian People; and since on his voyage to Athens he was brought to land by the Herakleots and deprived by them of his sails, to elect as an envoy one man from all the Athenians to go to Herakleia to Dionysios and to request him to return (40) Herakleides’ sails and refrain in future from wronging those sailing to Athens; and by acting in this way he will be acting justly and will not fail to be treated justly by the Athenian People; and the treasurer of the People shall give 50 drachmas travelling expenses to the elected envoy from the (45) People’s fund for expenditure on decrees. Thebagenes of Eleusis was elected envoy.+8+ Decree 1 +9+ Telemachos son of Theangelos of Acharnai proposed: the People shall resolve: that the Council shall formulate and bring forward to the next Assembly a proposal about Herakleides, for (50) him to obtain whatever benefit he can from the Athenian People. – Decree 2 Kephisodotos son of Euarchides of Acharnai proposed: concerning the People’s instruction to the Council to formulate a proposal about Herakleides of Salamis, the Council shall decide: (55) since Herakleides, having sailed to Athens bringing grain, donated to the People three thousand medimnoi at five drachmas each, the presiding committee (proedrous) allotted to preside at the next Assembly shall introduce Herakleides to the People and put his case on the agenda, (60) and submit the opinion of the Council to the People, that it seems good to the Council to praise Herakleides son of Charikleides of Salamis and crown him with a gold crown of 500 drachmas; and he shall be permitted to obtain from the People whatever benefit he can, so that (65) others may also show love of honour (philotimōntai), knowing that the Council honours and crowns those who show love of honour (philotimoumenous).+10+ Decree 4 Phyleus son of Pausanias of Oinoe+11+ proposed: since Herakleides of Salamis, having sailed to Athens bringing grain in the archonship of Aristophon (330/29), donated to the People 3000 medimnoi at 5 drachmas and for that the People resolved that the Council (70) should formulate and bring forward to the People a proposal for him to obtain whatever benefit he could from the Athenian People, and again in the archonship of Euthykritos (328/7) he donated to the People for grain purchase 3000 drachmas, the Council shall decide: that the presiding committee (proedrous) allotted to preside at the Principal Assembly+12+ shall introduce Herakleides to the People and put his case on the agenda and submit the opinion of the Council to the People, that it seems good to the Council, to praise Herakleides (75) son of Charikleides of Salamis and crown him with a gold crown of 500 drachmas; and that he be permitted to obtain from the People whatever benefit he may be worthy of, so that others may also wish . . . the Council and the People, seeing that those who are honour-loving ( philotimoumenous) . . . the People . . . all (80) . . . col. 1 In crown: The People. col. 2 In crown: The People. col. 3 In crown: The Council. col. 4 In crown: The Council.
