Funerary inscription of Marcus Carpus and Achilles

    Statements

Come, initially venerating the majestic divine power, look on us, whom the artist's hand has portrayed realistically. On the left I have placed myself, Marcus Carpus by name, who supervised the gold of the sacred mint. But at the pormpting of old age I now relax in retirement, and I earned the report of a good reputation under my emperor. On the other side is placed my dear Achilles, who for his prudence and training was worthy of our Caesar; we see this young man in the imperial secretariat, deservedly so. I have also set up the representation of our ancestor Achilles, like the star Bootes shining in the middle of the sky; he alone from a distance nobly protected us.
