The emperor Caesar Lucius Septimius Severus Pertinax, pious Augustus [= Septimius Severus, Augustus 193-211], and the emperor Caesar Marcus Aurelius Antoninus, pious Augustus [= Caracalla, Augustus 197/8-217], to Pollienus Sebennus, legate: Benefits which were bestowed, by order of the most noble Senate or by any emperor, on the colleges of the patchworkers [centonarii; the centonarii patched together rags, for instance as cloth for poorer people, or as blankets to extinguish fire; by the time of our inscription they were probably firefighters rather than a professional club] must not be casually overthrown, but what was sanctioned by their laws shall be protected. [However] those whom you say enjoy their privileges without burden shall be compelled to undertake public duties. For the privilege of the colleges shall neither benefit those who do not exercise the craft [of that college], nor those who possess better opportunities from the outset (praefinito modo). While the remedy of law must be applied against the rich, the number [of college members] must not be diminished because of these; on the other hand, the poorer [members] shall enjoy an exemption which should not be withdrawn from the benefits of the colleges.[There follows a long list of names of centonarii, set out in seven columns] The council and the people set up this tablet (tabula) in honour of Marcus Secundius, father of Secundinus, from the funds of the college of the patchworkers, by decree of the councillors (decurionum) of the community (res publica) of Solva, on the day before the Ides of October, in the year when the emperor Antoninus, for the second time, and Geta were consuls [= 14 October 205]; Ursinus (---) took charge. The members of the college set up this tablet in honour of Marcus Secundius, father of Secundinus, in the place assigned to the college of patchworkers by decree of the councillors of the community of Solva, on the day before the Ides of October in the year when the emperor Antoninus, for the second time, and Geta were consuls [= 14 October 205]; Ursinus (---) took charge.
