(ll. 5-21:) [Would you wish,] would you order, since the res publica of the Roman people has been augmentedby [the resources] and the counsels [of the immortal gods, an since the loyalty of the Athenians,] a most famous state, [towards the Roman people] has been confirmed, [and since that state is] decorated [with many sanctuaries,] among which number the sanctuary of Apollo is established [as the most ancient] and the most sacred [on the island of Delos, and since because of the sacredness] and holiness [of that sanctuary] and its [ancient] rites [it was agreed by our ancestors that that] island, in which island [it is agreed] that Apollo and Diana were born, should be freed from taxes, which island, within [the memory] of men [has alway been exempt] from the control of [all] kings, states and peoples, sacred, free, [and immune,] and [since] the pirates, who for many [years have laid waste] the world [and have plundered the sanctuaries] shrines and images of the immortal gods and the [most] sacred places, have been defeated and destroyed as a result of the Lex Gabinia, and every[most sacred and holy] seat of Apolloand Diana, except for the island of Delos, has been restored to its ancient [state and splendour], and it [is] consonant with the dignity and majesty of the Roman people, [now that the res publica] has been most [gloriously] served, and its empire increased, and peace [established] throughout the world, for that the most noble and most holy island [to be returned] to the immortal gods [and for the whole] island to be freed, (ll.21-31) (would you wish, would you order) that it be not [up for contract then]when its tax, [according to the conditions declared] in the auction which L. Cae[sar and C. Curio, the censors] conducted for the island of Delos, [shall have been collected this year], and that no further tax [or anything for] the guarding of public corn [should be owed, and that] no-one thereafter should auction the island [of Delos and the islands] which [are] around Delos, [in whose number] (there are) Artemita and Celadea [and the neighbouring islands,] or make [the island of Delos] and those islands [liable to tax, and that those who inhabit or have inhabited or thereafter] shall inhabit [the island of] Delos [should not owe] tax; [and that, whatever] rights the island [of Delos and those who inhabited the island] possessed [before] Mithridates [opened hostilities] against [the Roman people,] the island of Delos [and those who] shall inhabit [it] should possess [the same] rights; [and that ---] or animals which they import [---] and Delos [---] Delos;(ll. 31-6) and that, whoever [shall have made liable to tax or auctioned] that island or [(those) islands,] which are written down above, his property and goods, [up to] half, should be subject to a fine, and that in relation to that] matter [there should be action according to] statute [and that every] magistrate [should see that there should be trial] and judgment [and that no-one] should intercede against [him or do anything else to the effect that there should not be,] or improperly be, [judgment] concerning this matter [and] trial. Die Consuln Aulus Gabinius, Sohn des Aulus, und Lucius Calpurnius Piso, Sohn des Lucius, haben auf Beschluss des Senates das Volk nach Recht befragt, und das Volk hat nach Recht erkannt , auf dem Forum, vor den Rostren des Castortempels, am sechsten Tag vor den Kalenden (...) Es war an der Wahleinheit (tribus) (...), als erste abzustimmen. Für seine Tribus stimmte als erster Aulus Gabinius Capito, Sohn des Aulus. Wir fragen euch, Römer, wollt ihr und befehlt ihr, weil die Gemeinschaft (res publica) des römischen Volkes durch den Beistand und die Ratschlüsse der unsterblichen Götter groß geworden ist, und da die Loyalität der allerstrahlendsten Stadt der Athener zum römischen Volk sich bestätigt hat, und da diese Stadt mit vielen Tempeln geschmückt ist, von denen der Tempel des Apollon auf der Insel Delos als ältestes und heiligstes gegründet wurde; wegen seiner Heiligkeit (religio) und Unantastbarkeit (sanctitas) und der [altehrwürdigen] Zeremonien dieses Tempels (...), dass jene Insel, auf der, wie die Menschen glauben, Apollon und Diana geboren sind, von Steuern frei sein soll. Diese Insel ist seit Menschengedenken immer frei von der Herrschaft aller Könige, Städte und Völker gewesen, sakrosankt, frei und immun;und da die Räuber, die den Erdkreis viele Jahre lang verheert haben,und die Tempel, Heiligtümer und Kultbilder der unsterblichen Götter und die allerheiligsten Orte (...) geplündert haben,durch das Gabinische Gesetz (lex Gabinia) [67 vom Volkstribunen Aulus Gabinius eingebracht und durch die Volksversammlung beschlossen, stattete das Gesetz Pompeius für den Krieg gegen die Piraten mit einer außergewöhnlichen Machtfülle aus] besiegt und ausgemerzt sind, und [da] jeder im höchsten Grade heilige und weihevolle Sitz des Apollon und der Diana, außer der Insel Delos, in seinem alten Zustand und Glanz wiederhergestellt wurde, und es ein Zeichen der Würde und Größe des römischen Volkes sei, nun da der Staat auf das schönste verwaltet werde, der Machtbereich erweitert wurde, und der Friede über den ganzen Erdkreis hergestellt wurde, dass jene im höchsten Grade edle und heilige Insel, [wieder] eine den unsterblichen Göttern geweihte Insel werde und dass sie befreit werde, so dass sie nicht der Besteuerung unterliege. (...) dass, (...) wenn ihre Steuer, gemäß dem Gesetz, das in dem Pachtvertrag festgelegt ist, den die Censorn Lucius Caesar und Caius Curio für die Insel Delos geschlossen haben, in diesem Jahr eingezogen sein wird, dass weder irgend eine weitere Steuer gezahlt werden muss, noch Geld für die Aufbewahrung öffentlichen Getreides; dass ferner auch später niemand die Insel Delos und die Inseln, die um Delos herum sind, darunter Artemita, Celadea und die benachbarten Inseln, [an einen Steuerpächter] verpachten soll, oder Delos und diese Inseln steuerpflichtig machen soll. Ferner, dass weder die jetzigen, die früheren und die späteren Bewohner von Delos Steuern zahlen müssen. In diesem Rechtsstatus war die Insel Delos mit ihren Bewohnen, bevor Mithridates das römische Volk mit Krieg überzog; unter dasselbe Recht sollen die Insel Delos und ihre Bewohner fallen (...) und das Vieh, das sie importieren (...) nach Delos und (...) Delos, wer diese Insel oder die Inseln, die oben benannt sind, jetzt oder in Zukunft bewohnt, wenn sein Hausstand (familia) oder sein Geldvermögen mehr oder weniger geschädigt wurde, (...) Rechtsprechung (?) (...) über diese Angelegenheit wird ihm ein Urteil der Magistraten oder Promagistraten des Volkes oder der Plebs (?) ergehen (...) Richterliche Untersuchung soll stattfinden, und keiner soll einschreiten oder etwas anderes unternehmen zu dem Zweck, dass in dieser Sache nicht glücklich entschieden oder geurteilt wird. Wenn etwas sakrosankt ist, so dass es nicht mit Recht gefordert werden kann, [dann] wird nichts davon mit diesem Gesetz gefordert.
